DoD releases report on Newburgh PFOA contamination

MidHudsonNews [dot] com is reporting the Department of Defense has released its report on the Stewart Air National Guard Base PFOA contamination of the Newburgh city water supply. That report determined that the carcinogenic chemical did indeed leak into Washington Lake reservoir on the New Windsor, town of Newburgh boundary. The defense department previously refused to take responsibility or to agree to fund remediation pending the outcome of their own report, despite the fact that the state Department of Environmental Conservation had conducted its own study. U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said getting the DoD to complete the report "was like pulling teeth." The senator said July 12, “This report must be immediately shared with the public and environmental experts so we can quickly understand the extent of the contamination and peruse the quickest and most effective ways to remove these toxins from our drinking water systems.” For more than a year, the state has been paying for the city of Newburgh to get its water from the New York City Catskill Aqueduct.
