Ulster GOP chair accuses elections official of bias

Dec 19, 2019 1:00 pm
Patricia Doxsey is reporting for the Daily Freeman the chair of Ulster County Republican Committee, Roger Rascoe, is calling for Democratic elections commissioner Ashley Dittus to recuse herself from the hand recount of ballots in the district attorney's race. Rasco alleges that Dittus' recent comments about the process indicate that she cannot be objective. He said it was clear she "has a bias and has already made a predetermination about the recount." In addition to her duties at the Board of Elections, Dittus is also the secretary of the Ulster County Democratic Committee. Democrat David Clegg currently leads the race by 79 votes. Upon learning on December 17, that Republican Michael J. Kavanagh would not waive a recount in that race, Dittus was quoted as saying the votes Kavanagh needs to win "will not materialize out of thin air, and this recount will be an expensive and time-consuming exercise when this process has already proved time and again to have been accurate and transparent." Kavanagh said this week he would not waive a recount after "much reflection and consideration" because he has an obligation to the thousands of voters who supported him to let the process play out. Dittus said the recount began Wednesday and that "not one irregularity [was] found with hundreds of ballots counted." The recount could take up to a month and is expected to cost between $16,000 and $20,000. As the current chief assistant DA, Kavanagh will become acting district attorney if the mandatory recount is not completed by Jan. 1. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
