Wrestling Hall of Fame could be headed to Catskill

Mar 19, 2020 10:30 am
Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media three entrepreneurs March 16, presented to the Greene County Legislature the idea of making Catskill the new home of the Wrestling Hall of Fame. The presentation was made by Catskill native Michael Lanuto, former Saugerties school district superintendent Seth Turner and Tony Vellano, the founder of the International Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame was founded in 1999 in Schenectady, moved to Amsterdam in 2002 and then to Wichita Falls, Texas, in 2016. Vellano said he was unhappy with how the hall was managed in Texas and that East Coast residents wanted the attraction to make a comeback. The site under consideration by the group is the Freightmaster’s Building at Historic Catskill Point. Greene County Treasurer Peter Markou voiced his objection to the location. "The Point is a major county asset and as the treasurer and chief financial officer of the county, I would be remiss in my fiduciary duty if I did not try to protect it. It belongs to the people,” Markou said. Lanuto said the group wants to preserve the historic nature of the building. “But right now it’s dying,” Lanuto said. “We just want to breathe some life into that baby.” Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
