Cryptocurrencies are have a huge climate impact due to the massive use of computers - and electricity - to perform the block chain verification for some crypto coins. Liz Moran of NYPIRG discusses with WOOC's Mark Dunlea about the effort to impose a moratorium on such efforts in New York. And Sean Sweeney of CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies, and head of Trade Unions for Energy Democracy (TUED), discusses with WOOC's Mark Dunlea his new article in the New Labor Forum on Why Renewable Energy Companies are Not Climate Warriers. He discusses the continued expansion of energy use; the need for public power; and the upcoming COP26 in Glasgow. And, Daniel Smith, who teaches at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, speaks about what the history of public health and medicine can teach us about the current coronavirus. He also shared his own personal experience of having his family infected with breakthrough COVID-19 (getting COVID-19 although fully vaccinated) and possible ways forward. Plus, in the latest Hudson Valley Word of Mouth segment, Julia Joern visits with Marilla (Mars) Abrahamsen, founder of the Phoenix Web Collective, and volunteer, Helena Kaminski. Originally started as a pop-up in Prattsville, it is now housed in a storefront on Main Street in Hunter. A resource for the community, the Phoenix Web Collective is part free market, part creative space for artists and others. As a free store, it offers a range of useful locally-donated items, including clothing, back-to-school supplies, toys, home goods, small appliances, electronics, books, and more. The Phoenix Web Collective is also a place for hands-on DIY workshops and educational and skill-sharing events.
The show features local news, interviews with community leaders and personalities, a rundown of local and regional events, weather updates, and more about and for the community. The show is a place for a community conversation about issues, with music, and more. Saturday the emphasis is more on radio art, and art on the radio. Unlike shows by individual programmers on the station, the "WGXC Afternoon Show" is considered partially station-run. The Wednesday show calls itself the "Drive-Time Show" and Sunday's is "Li Le, Le Tan."
