Greene Co. reports two swimming accidents in one day

Bill Williams is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media Greene County was the scene of two swimming accidents this week. A 63-year-old Queens man died the afternoon of July 14, at Lake Heloise in Windham apparently while swimming, Greene County Undersheriff Adam Brainard said. The man's identity is being withheld pending notification of his family. Windham firefighters and Windham Ambulance were sent to Serendipity Lake House following a call to Greene County 911 around 5 p.m. The man entered the water from a small boat on the lake and began swimming to shore, but he went under the water at some point, not to be seen again. His body was recovered on the lake by rescue crews, Brainard said. The county Sheriff’s Office is continuing the investigation. On the same day and at nearly the same time in Cairo, an incident occurred in the Catskill Creek that Cairo police called a near-drowning, Officer Ray Feml said. A girl was taken by Cairo Ambulance to Albany Medical Center, where she was listed in stable condition in the Pediatric Center. Cairo firefighters and ambulance were sent by county dispatch to the location around 5:11 p.m. in the area of the Woodstock Dam. A six-year-old boy, who was swimming with the girl, began having trouble staying afloat, grabbed the girl and pulled her under.
