Keshia Clukey is reporting for Politico New York the New York State Regents and Education Department this fall are continuing to review and revise recent education reforms, having just approved new state learning standards. Regents Chancellor Betty Rosa recently said the Regents are expected to extend the existing moratorium on the use of grades 3 through 8 math and English test scores in teacher evaluations. The moratorium is supposed to run through the 2019-20 school year, but more time may be needed, Rosa said. Sticking to the current timeline would put lawmakers under a lot of pressure to make changes during the upcoming legislative session and everyone agrees the process should not be rushed. Education Trust-New York executive director Ian Rosenblum said, "We should think about two goals: First, the teacher evaluation system must make the needs of students paramount.... Second, there has to be enough confidence in the system by those who are being evaluated and by the public that it has credibility." Read more at Politico New York [dot] com.
