Veterans Services moving to Greenport
Aug 27, 2019 1:15 pm
Jeanette Wolfberg is reporting for The Columbia Paper the Columbia County Veterans Services Department is preparing to move its administrative offices from State Street in Hudson to Fairview Avenue in Greenport. The move is expected to happen in early September. Gary Flaherty, the department’s executive director, said planning began last year, after the department received a grant from the PFC Dwyer Fund. The fund helps people transition from military to civilian life. The county received funding from Dwyer to support its programs, making it possible for the Veterans Services Department to rent space at 389 Fairview for a day room, or a recreation room, where veterans and their families can unwind. As of August 14, Flaherty was authorized to expand into the space above the day room. Additional opportunities are opening up for veterans and their families, Flaherty said, including an opportunity at the Martin Van Buren historic site and at the High and Mighty Horse Farm in Ghent. “The Dwyer Fund is turning into a good thing for our veterans,” Flaherty said.
