Cuomo to seek constitutional change to secure reproductive rights

Tom Precious is reporting for The Buffalo News state lawmakers this month expect to pass a bill to enhance and expand abortion rights and access. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said Jan. 7, he wants to take that effort a step further by getting the protections included in the state constitution. At an event with former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton Barnard College in Manhattan, the governor said he wants the far-reaching abortion rights language placed into the constitution to protect against what he called “this crazy political world” that in the years ahead could undo the changes expected to be made by the state Legislature. A constitutional change requires two separately elected sessions of the state Legislature to approve an amendment before a statewide referendum is held. Based on that requirement, the earliest that voters would consider an abortion amendment would be in the fall of 2021. Read the full story in the Buffalo News.
