Cuomo adds immigration lawyers

Mar 15, 2019 8:34 am
Mallory Moench reports in the Albany Times Union that Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced March 14 fifteen immigration attorneys on his statewide rapid response team who will provide emergency legal services to immigrants targeted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in the state. Last week, ICE agents attempted to detain two people in Hudson, but a local immigrant advocate questioned their lack of a warrant, and the traffic stop ended. "While the federal government continues to threaten our immigrant communities, New York will not stop fighting to protect the rights of new Americans," Cuomo said in a press release. "With this new program and expanded opportunity centers, we are ensuring vulnerable immigrants who are unfairly targeted by ICE have the legal assistance and services they need to achieve their full potential in New York." In the Hudson Valley and Capital Region Cuomo will employ Neighbors Link, and Prisoner's Legal Services of New York, both providing two attorneys to Cuomo's team.
