Ravena officials vote to dissolve village court

Jun 22, 2020 5:45 am
Melanie Lekocevic is reporting for Capital Region Independent Media that the Ravena Village Court is no more. On June 16, village officials voted to abolish the court and to transfer all cases to Coeymans Town Court for adjudication. The court will be dissolved effective in 30 days, on July 16. Only Deputy Mayor William Bailey voted "no" on the resolution. The resolution stated that maintaining the court “far outweighs its potential revenues, especially in light of the duplication of services” by the town court, and it would be in the best interest of taxpayers to put an end to it. The village will continue to collect fines levied for dog control violations, violations of local village laws and handicapped parking violations. But once the town court takes over the village cases, the town will collect the fines related to violations of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law as well as criminal violations that take place within the village. Closed case files will remain village property and be maintained by the village clerk. The decision to abolish the village court is subject to permissive referendum, so if the requisite number of registered voters in the village sign a petition in favor of taking a vote, the question of dissolving the court will be decided by the voters.
