Local Farm Friends member of Dairy Quiz Bowl team; 4-H Member Awards announced

Margaret Smith is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media Columbia and Greene counties 4-H member Emily Ooms was a member of the New York 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl team that placed first in the nation competition held in Louisville, Kentucky, in November. Ooms also ranked the second highest individual competitor overall. Ooms is from Valatie, is a member of the Farm Friends 4-H Club and a student at Cornell University. She is currently serving as the New York State Dairy Princess. The 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl contest is a Jeopardy-style contest focusing on the dairy industry. The New York quiz bowl team has won the national championship three years in a row. Read the full story in The Daily Mail. In other 4-H news, Margaret Carlson of Cairo, Christian and Jacob Lafferty of Stuyvesant and Zaia Ivan of New Baltimore have received the Outstanding 4-H Member Award for the 4-H Club Program of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Columbia and Greene Counties. The teenagers were selected on a basis of the number of years in 4-H, quality and variety of project work, involvement in county and community service activities, as well as completion of project records.
