Supervisors renew taxes with one dissent

Aug 30, 2017 3:03 pm
Jeanette Wolfberg reports in The Columbia Paper that the Columbia County Board of Supervisors voted August 9 to renew taxes on many real estate transactions and mortgages. Edward Nabozny (I-Greenport) was the only supervisor voting against renewing the taxes through December 31, 2020. Nabozny said he voted against both because they apply only to first-time home buyers and people buying a more valuable property, and he prefers the sales tax, because all people pay it. The board, at the meeting, planned to spend some of those tax dollars by adding a mental health satellite clinic on the Ichabod Crane Central School District premises; approving $12,000 for an Opioid Epidemic Public Health Education campaign; and moving forward with an environmental approval on a plan to buy 9.7 acres in the Gerald R. Simons Commerce Park for a training center for its firefighter training, and emergency vehicles and equipment. The Columbia County Board of Supervisors meets next at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 13 at 401 State Street in Hudson. Read the full story in The Columbia Paper.
