May 25, 2020 6:00 am
Liz Schaeffer is reporting for the Greenville Pioneer the Cairo-Durham Central School District has moved graduation from late June to July 17. “It is the hope that some of the restrictions that are currently in place may be lifted by that time, permitting the traditional graduation ceremony to take place,” Cairo-Durham High School Principal Paula McKeown wrote in a recent letter to seniors and their families. The high school Graduation Committee, made up of parents, teachers, administrators and staff will be meeting regularly to make alternative arrangements in the event restrictions are not lifted. All graduating seniors have been given congratulatory lawn signs to display at home. The plans for Greenville High School's commencement are still under consideration, Superintendent Tammy Sutherland said. Sutherland said at a May 11 school board meeting the district has been reaching out to seniors to get their opinions before making a decision. Greenville Drive-in owner Dwight Grimm confirmed that several districts, including Greenville, have reached out about the possibility of holding their commencement ceremonies there.
