Poll finds majority of New Yorkers do not believe Cuomo should resign

May 24, 2021 2:30 pm

Chris Bragg is reporting for the Times Union a new Siena College poll of registered New York voters has found the majority of participants still believe Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo should not resign. But many voters would like to elect someone other than the three-term governor when the next gubernatorial election occurs in 2022. Cuomo has not indicated that he will not run for a fourth term. The current polling indicates that Cuomo would do well against a Republican in the general election, but not as well as State Attorney General Letitia James [Luh·tee·shuh Jeimz], who is frequently mentioned as a possible Democratic primary challenger. James's office is investigating Cuomo’s use of state government employees to complete a book for which he was paid $5.1 million. She has not publicly indicated any interest in running for governor next year. When asked if they would prefer James or a generic Republican, voters favored James 46 percent to 29 percent. When asked whether they would prefer Cuomo or a generic Republican in 2022, voters sided with Cuomo by a margin of 48 to 38 percent. Siena pollster Steven Greenberg said, “Independent voters side with James by three points over an unnamed Republican, while the unnamed Republican beats Cuomo by 18 points with independents. Cuomo leads among Black voters by 47 points and he trails with white voters by nine points. However, James leads among Black voters by 61 points and she leads among white voters by five points.” The poll did not test a potential match-up between Cuomo and James. A solid majority of participants continue to approve of Cuomo's handling of the pandemic, and more voters still say he should not resign, Greenberg said. The current Republican frontrunner, U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin of Long Island, had a 20 percent positive favorability rating and 19 percent unfavorable. Read the full story in the Times Union.
