Papers fight off second cyber attack

May 03, 2019 2:15 pm
Alec Johnson of The Watertown Times is reporting the virus that crippled the data infrastructure of Johnson Newspaper Corp., including The Daily Mail and the Register-Star, last weekend re-emerged early May 2. As a result, the corporation's information technology staff disabled the company servers. In spite of the attack, the daily paper was published May 3, as expected. The virus spread quickly throughout Johnson Newspaper Corp., affecting the internal sharing of content used to produce newspapers in Watertown, Hudson and Massena. "Despite Thursday’s setback, skilled and resilient staff has been working to rebuild critical digital infrastructure necessary for doing business. No timeline has been set for full recovery, but each day progress has been made to allow for the publication of news and advertising for Columbia-Greene Media," Johnson wrote. The local papers lost ads and the classified advertising system was crippled, but the papers found alternative methods for publishing legal notices. No information was stolen from the servers. The attack is under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
