Coeymans, Albany County Sheriff reach sharing agreement

Jan 10, 2020 12:21 am
Jackson Wang reports for Spectrum News that the Coeymans Town Board voted unanimously Jan. 9 for a municipal agreement between the southern Albany County town and the Albany County Sheriff’s office. Under the deal, the sheriff’s office would cover Coeymans with two dedicated patrols 24/7. The town will provide a substation for the sheriff’s office. Coeymans gets to cut two shifts from its police department and save about $280,000. The town is not getting rid of its police department, but 21 part-time officers would have fewer shifts. “Some of our officers will receive a bi-weekly paycheck for three days total, and the one question I ask is how can we expect someone to make a living or contribute to their families — especially in the state of New York — on this merit,” said Coeymans Police Officer and PBA Member Michael Case. Town Supervisor George McHugh contended it was a good plan for the town. “Nobody likes to see shifts cut, but I think this is a win-win for the people of Ravena and Coeymans,” McHugh said.
