Columbia County has bridges needing fixing; funds may be on the way

Katie Kocijanski and Victoria Addison report in the Register Star that Columbia County owns 131 public bridges, and “We currently have 27 structurally deficient county-owned bridges and 19 functionally obsolete county-owned bridges,” said Dean Knox, the director of the Columbia County engineering division of the Department of Public Works. “Between the County bridge replacement projects ongoing this summer and those planned for next summer, we will be eliminating four of those 27 structurally deficient bridges by the end of next summer.” Last week Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the BRIDGE NY Initiative program with $200 million available to municipalities over the next two years to fix more bridges. “We have several bridges that we would probably apply for. Throughout the county we have a lot of bridge needs, but we haven't nailed down specifically which ones we would apply for yet and we won't know that for another month or so,” Knox said.
