Labor Dept. report cites Zoom Flume for accident

Nov 06, 2014 12:10 am
Audrey Matott in The Daily Mail writes that the Department of Labor’s accident report after the Aug. 23 injury to local pastor, Rev. Paul Meador, on Zoom Flume Water Park’s Canyon Plunge ride, was due to several errors by the East Durham water park. According to details provided in a press release from the law firm of Martin, Harding & Mazzotti, violations cited were failure to report a serious accident within 24 hours, failure to provide age appropriate staffing for the ride, failure to inspect the slide prior to opening to public use, and failure to manage a maintenance and safety schedule for the slide. Specifically about the accident, the report says when cleaning the slide the night before, a drainage plug was not put back into place, not allowing water to enter the run-up at the end of the slide. Also, the lifeguard who was supposed to be stationed at the bottom of the slide was held up at another slide, waiting to be relieved by another employee so that he could move onto his station at the Canyon Plunge. Meador underwent multiple surgeries at Albany Medical Center and is confined to a wheelchair for at least the next six months. Meador is the presiding pastor at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Coeymans Hollow and the Dormansville United Methodist Church, and was on an outing with the youth group from his church when the accident occurred.
