State health officials find a few virus ticks

Jon Campbell reports in the Poughkeepsie Journal that state health have found 22 ticks with the Powassan virus in the Saratoga area. The ultra-rare virus causes death in about 10 percent of cases. Health officials went through 2,700 ticks in the area, finding 22 with the virus. "The enhanced surveillance will continue in the fall with collection of adult ticks from many of these same sites, as well as collection and testing of blood from hunter-killed deer, for previous exposure to Powassan," state Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker said Aug. 29.
