Cuomo signs gun control legislation
Jul 30, 2019 12:00 pm
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo July 29, signed legislation to establish an extended waiting period for anyone not immediately approved to purchase a firearm through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System and to close existing legal loopholes to ban ownership or sale of bump stocks. "For too long gun violence has plagued communities across our nation and while the federal government turns a blind eye, New York continues leading the way forward to protect our families and our children," Cuomo said in a press release. "By signing these measures into law we are strengthening our nation-leading gun laws — banning devices whose sole purpose is to create the most bloodshed in the shortest timeframe and providing law enforcement the tools they need to stop firearms from falling into dangerous hands." In the announcement, Cuomo also touted the recently enacted Red Flag bill that allows New York teachers and school administrators to "help prevent school shootings through court intervention." The law also targets what, according to Cuomo, is the "well-known link between domestic abuse and deadly gun violence." Read the full press release at governor [dot] ny [dot] gov.
