The Mid-Hudson News Network is reporting a section of Route 23 in the towns of Ashland and Windham has been named “Wayne C. Speenburgh Memorial Highway.” The bill, sponsored by state Sen. George Amedore and state Assembly member Peter Lopez was signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo last week. Speenburgh served as postmaster of the Coxsackie Post office from 1970 to 2000. He was elected to the Greene County Legislature in 2004 and became its chairman in 2007, a position he held until his illness caused him to step down. Speenburgh died on Sept. 17, 2015 at age 71. “Wayne’s energies and passion moved him to extraordinary efforts to support the community, and was clearly demonstrated as he helped his neighbors respond to and recover from the devastation of Hurricane and Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. All of us are proud of Wayne and his legacy,” Lopez said. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
