Friends of East Gate launch restoration campaign

May 09, 2017 7:15 am

Rosa Acheson is reporting in the Register-Star Friends of East Gate recently announced its campaign to restore and reuse the historic building located on Route 23 in Hillsdale. The project was started by Hillsdale Town Supervisor Peter Cipkowski, who heads the Roe Jan Historical Society. The East Gate Tollhouse was purchased by the Friends group in December. The first phase of work includes a site evaluation and stabilization of the 1850 structure. There is no timeline for the restoration process yet, because the organization does not know what the building will be used for, Friends of East Gate Director Chris Atkins said. The organization first has to stabilize the building before community discussions around its use can start, he said. The project will be entirely funded through grants and donations, not taxpayer dollars, Atkins said. Read the full story in the Register-Star.
