Chatham village prepares for a police policy review

Jul 22, 2020 5:45 am
Emilia Teasdale is reporting for The Columbia Paper the Chatham Village Board has declared its intent to form a committee to consider police reform. Mayor John Howe said at a recent public meeting the board is looking to create a core group to formulate a new police policy by the spring of 2021. Deputy Chief Joe Alessi was at the meeting and said he was open to the policy review. “...It’s a good thing,” Alessie said. Chatham has a part-time police force. All police agencies statewide are re-examining their policies after Governor Andrew Cuomo in June signed the New York State Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative executive order. Howe said the village plans to be “absolutely transparent” with the process. Trustee Lenore Packet suggested the mayor send letters to local clergy about joining the committee. The board will discuss the matter further at its August meeting. Read the full story in The Columbia Paper.
