Siobhan Barton is reporting in the Register Star the Greenport highway department has installed five of its snow plows with Bluetooth hands-free communication technology. Highway Superintendent Mark Gaylord reported at the town board meeting Wed., Dec. 3, the $1,500 investment will make it safer for drivers to communicate with the depot without having to take their hands off the wheel to answer their phones. The wireless technology will channel cell calls — usually drowned out by an engine’s loud roar — through the vehicle's radio. Drivers will press a radio button to accept a call, eliminating the need to search for a phone and pulling over to answer, Gaylord said. A renewal of the town's radio license, along with a change in radio bandwidth required to meet FCC standards, would have cost the town close to $20,000. Read the full story in the Register Star.
