Albany County holds hearing on banning conversion therapy

Apr 25, 2018 11:15 am
WNYT TV reports that Albany County held a public hearing April 24 about banning conversion therapies of minors that claim to turn homosexuals into heterosexuals. One man, reasoning that alcoholics be converted through alcoholics anonymous, did not support the proposal, but everyone else did. “The use of mental health therapy for something that is not diagnosed as a disorder is problematic,” said the Executive Director of the New York State Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers Samantha Howell. “Homosexuality has not been a mental health disorder for some time now.” New York's LGBT Health and Human Services says that in 2016, 10.5 percent of all LGBTQ youth reported being subjected to conversion therapies. One many at the hearing claimed conversion therapy is going on in the area. "I was approached by two gentlemen who informed me that there was a way to fix me, this was in Albany County,” said Judd Krasher, who claimed that many of his friends did do conversation therapy. “They’re not doing so good, I’ll tell you that right now,” he said. “Many of them are dealing with huge amounts of depression and substance abuse.” New York City and Buffalo currently ban the practice, and the New York State Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers is rallying at the Capitol April 25 to ask for a statewide ban on conversion therapy.
