Hochul increases penalties for spam calls

Molly Burke reports in the Times Union that on Sept. 13 Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation increasing the penalties for telemarketers who violate the Do Not Call registry rules. The previous fine was $11,000 for violating the rules, and now it is $20,000. Hochul said, “Every day, hardworking New Yorkers are forced to field call after call from relentless telemarketers.... Today, we’re raising the penalty for violators of the Do Not Call registry to deter telemarketers, protect New Yorkers, and send a clear message that New York won’t tolerate these frustrating, unsolicited calls.” The Federal Trade Commission runs the Do Not Call registry.
