Hudson considering parking violation amnesty

Aug 18, 2023 12:46 am

Jammel Cutler reports for Columbia-Greene Media that the Hudson Common Council is considering giving amnesty to parking violators. Hudson officials are discussing opening a short window for amnesty for parking violations issued on or before Jan. 1, 2020. Mayor Kamal Johnson said they just want to give local residents a break. Johnson said, “Right now, there are parking issues all over the city.... What I’m looking to do is to create a grace period of 60 to 90 days where they can pay their original ticket and clear it so they’re not booted and towed. This will help out a lot of the citizens. Johnson said, “The conversations I’ve been having, especially with a lot of the elderly population, there’s one woman who had to pay almost $600, and now she can’t afford things such as rent and mortgage.... It’s tough for people. It’s also tough for those who are disabled and have trouble parking close to their homes, and if they get a ticket for not switching sides, those tickets add up very quickly. This is something clear-cut for us to give back to the community; this is a one-time thing to come get it cleared and start fresh.” The Hudson Common Council is expected to vote on the proposal in September.
