Cuomo, some unions, pull out of Working Families Party

Jimmy Vielkind reports at Politico Gov. Andrew Cuomo said April 13 that he won't seek the Working Families Party’s nomination. That means actor Cynthia Nixon will likely be on the November ballot even if she loses to Cuomo in the Democratic primary. Several labor unions pulled out of the Working Families Party before Cuomo's announcement, a sign that it is less of a labor party, and more of an activist party led by groups such as Citizen Action and Make the Road. "The schism within the Working Families Party between their founding unions and some organizing entities is unfortunate,” wrote Abbey Fashouer, a spokeswoman for Cuomo 2018, in an email. “Given the announcement today that the remaining unions will no longer be a part of the WFP, we stand in solidarity with them and will not be seeking the endorsement of the third-party line at their convention next month.” In 2014, the Working Families Party nearly endorsed Zephyr Teachout over Cuomo.
