Coeymans Town Board outbid on golf course purchase

Feb 09, 2021 6:00 am

Melanie Lekocevic is reporting for Capital Region Independent Media the Coeymans Town Board February 4. approved resolutions to purchase the Sycamore Country Club, only to have the deal fall through two days later when another buyer offered a higher purchase price, according to town officials. Town Supervisor George McHugh said at the January 28, town board meeting, the purchase negotiations began four months ago. The club, on 160 acres located at 38 Tompkins Road in Ravena, was built in 1971 and includes an 18-hole golf course, according to Golfnow [dot] com. Town Supervisor George McHugh said, "The property owner died well over a year ago and Sycamore has been run by the estate — his two children — and they are just not interested in operating this golf course or the Evergreen Country Club over in Schodack." The town board proposed buying the property for $800,000 with a plan to turn it into a seasonal municipal golf course and year-round recreational facility. The board planned to finance the purchase of the club with the anticipated $1.2 million in host benefit funds from the Hecate [HEK-uh-tee] Energy solar farm project. McHugh said the purchase would have cost taxpayers nothing and been an investment for many years to come. But on Sat., Feb. 6, the board released a statement announcing the deal was dead; the owners were accepting another buyer. "We wish both the current and future owners of Sycamore all the best as they move forward with new plans," the board stated. Read the full story in The Ravena News-Herald.
