Latest bed count for new Greene County Jail drops to 64

Sarah Trafton reports for Columbia-Greene Media that a lot of different figures have been cited for how much the new Greene County Jail will cost, how much taxes will be raised to pay for it, and how many inmates the facility will hold. “We’re going to spend about $70 million for an 80-bed jail for 15 people,” former county legislator Lori Torgersen said on April 30 in Catskill about the project that will be the most expensive in Greene County's history. But now Greene County Administrator Shaun Groden says, “We are looking at shrinking the number of cells, probably down to 64.... It can be done fairly easily.” Bills signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo April 1 will mean many fewer prisoners in local jails. One of the new laws eliminates bail for misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies in favor of appearance tickets. Reformers predict the new laws could keep about 90 percent of people out of jail prior before court. As of April 19 this year, before the reforms begin in 2020, the county had 31 inmates shipped out to jails in Albany and Columbia county. The lower bed total needs approval from the state Commission of Corrections, which might not come until July, Groden says. He did not say whether that pushes back the groundbreaking for the facility in Coxsackie, which he has previously predicted will happen this month. Read the full story at HudsonValley360.com.
