In this third conversation of four organized around the book Listening Glossary, editor Hannah Kemp-Welch is joined by contributors Melissa Ryke, Verica Kovacevska, Joel Stern, Sean Dockray, and James Parker to consider listening in relation to bodies and machines.
Melissa Ryke reflects on how listening extends beyond the ears to encompass the body’s many senses. Verica Kovacevska describes ‘crip listening’ as a way to build community and advance disability justice. Joel Stern, Sean Dockray and James Parker turn to machine listening, opening up questions about how listening operates through technological systems.
Listening Glossary published by Silver Press, explores the many meanings and practices of listening. It gathers over two hundred terms from art, ecology, activism, psychology, education and philosophy across nine decades of thinking about listening as a way of relating to others, environments and structures of power.
