In this first conversation of four organized around the book Listening Glossary, editor Hannah Kemp-Welch is joined by contributors Cathy Lane and Pantea Armanfar to discuss relational forms of listening.
Cathy Lane reflects on her glossary entries ‘tender listening’ and ‘non-negotiated listening’, which critically examine questions of ethics. Pantea expands on her term ‘ham listening,’ drawing on the Farsi/Persian affix هم (ham), meaning ‘overlaying,’ ‘co-’ or ‘together.’ The term emerges from her work with the Khamoosh community, which explores Iran’s sonic heritage. Together, they consider the possibilities and complexities of listening with others.
Listening Glossary, published by Silver Press, explores the many meanings and practices of listening. It gathers over two hundred terms from art, ecology, activism, psychology, education and philosophy across nine decades of thinking about listening as a way of relating to others, environments and structures of power.
