In this second conversation of four organized around the book Listening Glossary, editor Hannah Kemp-Welch is joined by contributors Hildegard Westerkamp, Alice Eldridge and Riya Raagini to explore environmental forms of listening.
Hildegard Westerkamp reflects on her practice in acoustic ecology and how attentive listening can shape our relationship with the soundscape. Alice Eldridge explores how listening can shift our perspective away from a human-centered worldview towards an awareness of the interdependencies that sustain life. Riya Raagini speaks about listening to rivers on the edge of the Himalayas, considering our relationships with waterways and the wider ecosystems they support. Together, they explore how listening can deepen our sense of connection with the more-than-human world.
Listening Glossary published by Silver Press, explores the many meanings and practices of listening. It gathers over two hundred terms from art, ecology, activism, psychology, education and philosophy across nine decades of thinking about listening as a way of relating to others, environments and structures of power.
