State coalition of ed groups calls for $2B increase in school aid
Keshia Clukey is reporting at Politico New York a coalition of major state education organizations is calling on the Legislature and Gov. Andrew Cuomo to increase school aid by $2 billion in the 2018-19 state budget. The New York State Educational Conference Board's recommendations include a $1.5 billion increase in state aid to maintain current services and an additional $500 million in targeted funding. The targeted funds would assist struggling schools, invest in professional development, help meet the needs of English language learners, strengthen college and career pathways, and assist districts with growing enrollments. The board includes New York State United Teachers, the New York State Parent Teacher Association, New York State Council of School Superintendents and others. The Board of Regents is expected to approve its budget and legislative recommendations December 11 and 12. The Regents last year called for a $2.1 billion increase in funding, while the ECB recommended a $2 billion hike. Read the full story at Politico New York.
