Prisoners eat more local foods, less 'Loaf'

Apr 06, 2016 12:04 am
Casey Seiler at Capitol Confidential reports the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision has gone locavore, replacing several out-of-state items on its prison menus in favor of $1.8 million in purchases of state-grown and -produced food and beverages “such as apples, potatoes, beans, yogurt, ice cream, and milk.” The Buy NY program also boosts local food purchases for New York hospitals and colleges. DOCCS also eliminated another dish: a barely digestible food product known as “The Loaf” given to prisoners as a form of punishment, will no longer be served.
