ICC expects higher tax levy, need for more computers in coming year

Feb 19, 2018 4:00 pm
Emilia Teasdale is reporting for The Columbia Paper the Ichabod Crane school board is forecasting a higher tax cap and an increased demand for computers during the 2018-19 school year. The board discussed non-instructional programs at its February 6 meeting, including the district transportation department, its central office and staffing. During the 2017-18 school year, non-instructional portion of its $39-million budget totaled $18.8 million. In contrast, during the coming year the district is looking at spending $19.2 million. “We still have a ways to go on the whole budget season,” district Business Manager Michael Brennan told the board. Brennan said they will also review instructional costs, which include the academic programs, extracurricular activities and the sports program, at the board meeting in March. On April 10, Brennan said he would present the district revenues, including state aid. He said the 2018-19 tax cap is at 3.3 percent, higher than in the past. “The highest we’ve been for the last five years is 2.9 percent,” Brennan said. Whether or not the board agrees to create a budget that would meet the tax cap or stay below it, Brennan said, “will be based on some of the decisions we’ll be making in the next few months.” The Ichabod Crane school board will next meet at 7 p.m. on March 6, in the high school library.
