Secondary grades score low on tests at HCSD
Audra Jornov in the Register-Star reports that, "three of every five students in the secondary level of the Hudson City School District are not making Adequate Yearly Progress for English Language Arts and four out of five did not make AYP for mathematics, according to the 2010-11 New York State School Report card for the district." Hudson's graduation rate is 68 percent, well below the state's goal of 95 percent. “It’s difficult because we get compared to other school districts in Columbia County but we are not alike,” said Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Maria Suttmeier in Jornov's story. “We have a lot of challenges and we have a lot of students in large subgroups so we need to meet more requirements for larger subgroups. Hudson is unique.” May 17 are school elections, but there are no seats under contention in Hudson. Read the entire story in the Register-Star.
For Main Street, it’s a brand new Game
Doron Tyler Antrim reports that Catskill's Main Street will soon have a slightly different look as Stephen Kirwan Jr., the operator of Kirwan’s Game Store, bought the building that housed Looking Pretty and Van Gorden & Co., and plans to replace the stores with a new game shop and a bakery. "This will be the fourth incarnation of the game store since its inception," Antrim reports, noting it was last in the space that used to be the Muddy Cup coffee shop. The stores will close June 5 to make way for the new businesses. Kirwan’s father, Stephen Kirwan Sr. of Purling, was the winner earlier this year of the $122 million Powerball jackpot, taking home a lump sum payment of more than $61 million, or $40.4 million after taxes.
