Another accident causes worries at Cairo-Durham schools

Kaitlin Lembo reports in Columbia-Greene Media that another accident near the entrance to the Cairo-Durham high school and middle school has caused another round of outrage from parents. The Feb. 9 accident The accident involved a community resident, a former student, and a current teacher. The school district released a statement that said, in part, “Many of us know this is not the first accident to occur in this location.... Despite the district’s multiple efforts to make traffic changes at the school entrance, and although the district continues to pursue these efforts, it still comes down to driver education to encourage safe and cautious driving.” In the past, the state Department of Transportation denied requests to add a traffic light at the entrance, but did lower the speed limit in Route 145 from 55 to 45 mph near the school. A Department of Transportation study showed 85 percent of drivers speed by the school entrance, and Greene County Legislator William Lawrence believes increased police patrols would help the recurring problem.
