Rent talks between county, Coxsackie stall

Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media negotiations between the town of Coxsackie and Greene County over an increase in rent for the town's senior center have stalled. The Greene County Legislature County Services Committee tabled a resolution Mar. 11, to amend its contract with the Coxsackie senior center, located at 127 Mansion St., to reflect a rent increase of $250 a month. The county currently pays Coxsackie $750 a month in rent. The county pays rent to individual towns with a senior center, which is operated through the county Department of Human Services. The county’s three-year contract with the town of Coxsackie for the use of the building for 25 hours per week expires Dec. 31. “It is expensive to maintain the center,” Coxsackie Supervisor Richard Hanse said. “We spent $850 one month to repair the fridge.” The county pays more than $1,000 in monthly rent for each of the senior centers in Acra, Athens, Catskill and Jewett. Legislator Charles Martinez of Coxsackie, voiced support for amending the contract. Legislator Harry Lennon, of Cairo, feels the county’s senior center program as a whole is more important than the rent disagreement. Legislature Chairman Patrick Linger, of New Baltimore, agreed. “I don’t want to see the center shut down if we don’t amend the contract,” he said. Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
