William J. Kemble in The Daily Freeman reports that New Paltz is the latest Hudson Valley town to claim a "sanctuary" status of sorts. The Town Board April 20 unanimously passed a law stopping local police from performing federal immigration enforcement functions. On April 21, the U.S. Justice Department sent letters threatening the loss of grant money to several so-called "sanctuary" cities around the country if they do not remove certain barriers. “We probably had public comment for about 45 minutes [at Thursday’s meeting],” New Paltz Town Supervisor Neil Bettez said. “It was pretty moving stuff again, with stories about people being afraid that their parents are going to be taken away while they are at school, that they are going to be shipped off.” Read the full story in The Daily Freeman.
