Pacifica shuts down New York's WBAI-FM
Oct 08, 2019 3:00 pm
Democracy Now is reporting on Mon., Oct. 7, the nonprofit Pacifica Foundation, owner of New York's WBAI-FM, abruptly laid off most the station's staff and replaced local programming with shows from Pacifica's other stations. On Tuesday morning, a Manhattan Supreme Court judge ordered Pacifica to put the station back into the hands of WBAI personnel and to restore its signal to the radio airwaves and the station's website. Pacifica blamed the station's ongoing financial challenges for its decision to suddenly shut down the station. WGXC-FM is a member of the Pacifica Network, which is operated by the Pacifica Foundation, and airs "Off The Hook" from WBAI. The "Off The Hook" Twitter account reported Oct. 8 that a judge issued an injunction to put the station back on the air. "We're happy to announce that @WBAI has gotten an injunction to stay the takeover of the station by @RadioPacifica. All programming will resume and the next court date is October 18." "Off The Hook" airs at 8 p.m. Wednesdays live on both WBAI and WGXC.
