WGXC Afternoon Show: Melissa Gelley, David Quituisaca, Jose E. Cruz (Audio)
In the latest Hudson Valley Word of Mouth segment, Julia Joern visits with longtime Hudson Valley resident and experienced motorcycle rider, Melissa Gelley. She shares her knowledge of some of our region's most compelling routes, scenic vistas, back roads, and rural detours to discover on a motorcycle, especially during the leaf-peeping season. Together with her husband, fellow rider, and motorcycle lover, Steve Joern, Gelley has organized a special screening of "On Any Sunday" at TSL, a non-profit community space located in Hudson (Sunday, October 17, 4 p.m.). Originally released in 1971 -- and now re-mastered and digitally enhanced for its 50th anniversary -- this Academy Award-nominated documentary on motorcycle racing features stars of the sport at that time, including film star Steve McQueen, a racer in his own right. It was directed, shot, and narrated by filmmaker Bruce Brown, who invented a number of filming techniques that, while commonplace nowadays, were considered groundbreaking then. Also, the housing market has been booming in the Capital Region, with prices skyrocketing and longtime homeowners forced out. Homes have been selling quickly even as real estate agents developed new protocols to show and sell houses during the COVID-19 pandemic. WOOC's Moses Nagel spoke to a local realtor about the state of the market. This Sunday, Sept. 19 there will be the region’s first Latinx festival to celebrate Hispanic heritage and culture. Joining us to talk about it is David Quituisaca, community navigator at the Columbia County Sanctuary Movement. And t discuss September as Hispanic Heritage Month, producer Gabe Cruz-Allen spoke with Dr. Jose E. Cruz, political science and Latin American and Caribbean Studies professor at SUNY Albany on September 15, 2021. Dr. Cruz shared his perspective on his research over the years and his passion for Latin culture, especially music.
The show features local news, interviews with community leaders and personalities, a rundown of local and regional events, weather updates, and more about and for the community. The show is a place for a community conversation about issues, with music, and more. Saturday the emphasis is more on radio art, and art on the radio. Unlike shows by individual programmers on the station, the "WGXC Afternoon Show" is considered partially station-run. The Wednesday show calls itself the "Drive-Time Show" and Sunday's is "Li Le, Le Tan."
