Storms leave 11,000 homes in the dark in Columbia, Greene cos.

Bill Williams is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media nearly 11,000 homes were left without power after a strong storm system moved through Greene and Columbia counties late July 2. Central Hudson Gas and Electric reported 3,000 customers without power in northern Greene County. The largest number of outages occurred in the towns of Coxsackie and New Baltimore. National Grid said more than 6,000 of its customers in northern Columbia County were left in the dark. Kinderhook, Valatie, Niverville and parts of the town of Chatham were hardest hit. And nearly 2,000 outages were reported in the town of Ghent by New York State Electric and Gas. The storms began moving through both counties just before 6 p.m. bringing high winds and heavy rain. Much of the area was under a severe thunderstorm warning issued by the National Weather Service at about 5:50 p.m. There have been multiple reports of trees and wires down and in at least three instances falling trees landed on buildings.
