IDAs must now provide live webstreams, archives of meetings

Aug 27, 2019 11:57 pm
Liz Young reports for the Albany Business Review that Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill Aug. 27 mandating all Industrial Development Agency's create live webstreams of their meetings, and archive those meetings online. The archives must be available within five business days of a public meeting or hearing and remain online for at least five years. "Industrial development agencies are tasked with revitalizing communities and fostering economic growth at the local level, but most New Yorkers don't have time to attend meetings and participate in the process," Cuomo said in a statement. "This new measure will help foster civic engagement and get more residents involved in the meetings and hearings that will ultimately have a huge impact on the future of their communities." Many towns and cities already provide live webstreams of their meetings, as 2019 technology makes it cheap and easy to create a live webstream. Sarah Reginelli, executive director of the Albany IDA, estiimated it could cost about $4,000 to create a live webstream in time for when the law takes effect in January. Currently, WGXC has set up a live webstream with the Town of Catskill, where taxpayers are charged nothing. Read more about this story in the Albany Business Review.
