Liz Montgomery reports in Porcupine Soup that the Village of Catskill’s water system leaked about 1,500 gallons of aluminum salts into the Potic Creek in Coxsackie on Aug. 7. The creek is not a source of human drinking water, though countless animals rely on the water. The Village of Catskill’s water supply comes from the Potic Reservoir on Schoharie Turnpike in Coxsackie, with the plant on Potic Creek Road. Aluminum salt, or alum, is used by water treatment plants to clarify drinking water. New York State's Department of Environmental Conservation is investigating the spill, working to stop the flow into the Potic Creek, and collecting dead fish.
