Group in court to extend voter registration deadline

Ryan Tarinelli reports for The New York Law Journal that the League of Women Voters of New York State is attempting to extend the Oct. 9 deadline to register to vote in New York. The group is appealing a decision last month from a New York state judge, who denied a preliminary injunction extending the registration deadline. “The trial court turned a blind eye to the reality that thousands of New Yorkers who will register after the 25-day deadline and will be blocked from casting a valid ballot based on an outdated law with no current justification,” the group argued in court documents filed Oct. 6. “If preliminary relief is not granted, tens of thousands of New Yorkers will miss the registration deadline for a critical election in November.” Last month Judge J. Machelle Sweeting rejected a preliminary injunction to extend the deadline. “There is simply no showing here that the failure to grant the injunction would necessarily deprive any eligible voter of the right to vote, as any eligible voter could simply register to vote by the legal deadline,” Sweeting wrote.
