Amanda Purcell reports in Columbia-Greene Media that Hudson's Muslim and Bengali communities gathered April 12 at the Hudson Islamic Center to pray for a 20-year-old college student who suffered a brain injury while away at college. Fardush Sultana, a SUNY Polytechnic Institute junior majoring in civil engineering, was rushed to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica April 8 because of an unexplained head injury she sustained in her dormitory room. Sultana graduated from Hudson High School and is the daughter of Parveen Ahster and Abdul Bashar, with two sisters, Farzana and Fariah. In Hudson, Sultana was a member of her high school robotics team that competed in a state championship and ran cross-country. Family friend and spokesperson Mohammed Rony said a special prayer was said at the service, “so that Allah has mercy and forgiveness for her and her family.... The Muslim and Bangladeshi community have really come together to try to support the family.... It really hit the community hard.” The family, and Rony, would not explain the specifics of the incident, but local police said there was no indication of any criminality.
