Homeless rate in Columbia County down

Sep 20, 2012 5:13 am
Nathan Mayberg reports in the Register Star the Columbia County Board of Supervisors is reconsidering a homeless housing project in light of a reported drop in the county's homeless population. In early September, the county reported 27 homeless individuals received housing assistance, living in 17 local motel rooms, a decrease of 57 percent since March, and a 72 percent drop since last year. Columbia County Department of Social Services Commissioner Paul Mossman reported to the Board of Supervisors Human Services Committee Wed., Sept. 19, the numbers have "...never been this low before." In light of that information, Mossman told the committee, he was considering downsizing the scope of the proposed Galvan Quarters project currently under consideration by lawmakers. That plan calls for a facility to be located on the northwest corner of State and Seventh streets (one block from the WGXC Hudson studio), comprised of 19 SRO units for use as emergency housing, and 18 studio units for use as transitional housing. The shelter could cost the county up to $648,000 a year. The state would reimburse the county for 29 percent of that expense. Mossman cautioned the supervisors Wed., saying the homeless population could increase this winter, as it has in the past. "There is no guarantee," he said, the lower levels will continue.
