Cuomo says he wants changes to bail reform included in budget

Nick Reisman is reporting at the State of Politics blog Governor Andrew Cuomo, said in a radio interview February 28, he wants to see changes to the state's bail law included the budget. Cuomo said he will hold a public meeting with district attorneys, police and criminal justice advocates to discuss changes to the law. The state's bail reform legislation ended cash bail requirements for those facing misdemeanor and non-violent felony offenses. Republicans and law enforcement officials began assailing the law before it went into effect January 1, and the majority of respondents to a recent poll now believe it is bad for the state. Senate Democrats have proposed a change that would give judges the authority to determine if a person should remain in jail. In the radio interview, Cuomo said he wanted strict guidelines created to prevent judges from remanding someone because "they don't like the way they look or sound."
