In this fourth conversation organized around the book Listening Glossary, editor Hannah Kemp-Welch is joined by contributors Andrew Navin Brooks, Kay Lalor and Amanda Gutiérrez to discuss how power shapes listening.
Andrew Navin Brooks reflects on 'fugitive listening' as resistance to racial regimes. Kay Lalor examines how the state listens, and how institutions organise and classify the sounds they encounter. Amanda Gutiérrez explores the political dimensions of listening, from the reverberations of colonial histories to protest, silenced voices and collective expression. Together, they consider how listening is shaped by power, and how it might open up space for voices and experiences that are marginalised or unheard.
Listening Glossary published by Silver Press, explores the many meanings and practices of listening. It gathers over two hundred terms from art, ecology, activism, psychology, education and philosophy across nine decades of thinking about listening as a way of relating to others, environments and structures of power.
